How zakat is calculated

Zakat is 2.5% of the wealth you have held for a full lunar year, once it reaches the nisab. The nisab is the value of 52.5 tola of silver or 7.5 tola of gold. Most scholars in Pakistan recommend the silver nisab because it is lower and so includes more people who can give.

Gold is valued by purity: 22 karat jewellery is worth 22/24 of the 24 karat rate. Your home, car, furniture and clothes for personal use are not counted.

Banks deduct zakat automatically from some savings accounts on the first of Ramadan unless you submit a declaration. If yours was deducted, subtract that amount from what this calculator shows. For a specific ruling, ask a scholar you trust.
